What today is about

Block 2 stayed above ground. Today goes under it. Plus your first three-sources OPVL on a real Chennai crisis.

Aquifers come in two main types. Unconfined: an open water table, recharged directly by infiltration from above: the shallow aquifers under most cities, including Chennai. Quick to recharge during monsoons, quick to deplete during dry years. Confined: sealed by impermeable layers (clay, dense rock) above and below, recharged only through specific entry points often far away, often slowly. Confined aquifers can hold water that fell as rain hundreds or thousands of years ago.

Two more useful categories cut across those. Renewable aquifers recharge on human timescales: years to decades. Fossil aquifers don't: the water was deposited thousands to millions of years ago and, on any human horizon, recharge is irrelevant. Parts of the Ogallala (US Great Plains), the Nubian Sandstone (Sahara), and some of India's deep aquifers are fossil. Once a fossil aquifer drops, it doesn't come back. The political fight over fossil aquifers is fundamentally different from the fight over surface water; there's no monsoon to argue about.

Chennai's near-"Day Zero" in 2019 (callback to U4 Block 1's anchor bell ringer) wasn't just a reservoir-storage story. The headline image was the dry Red Hills and Cholavaram surface reservoirs, but the deeper crisis was the deep aquifers below the city, overdrawn by years of unregulated borewell pumping. Surface and groundwater collapsed together; that combination is what made it a near-disaster rather than a manageable drought. Today's OPVL set is built on this case.

Three OPVLs on Chennai groundwater + 3-sentence synthesis

Three structured OPVLs (one per source: government, news, AI), plus three sentences of synthesis. The synthesis names the single most contested claim across the three sources and which source you'd cite for what, with reasoning. The AI source's Limitation is the one to push hardest on; that's the year-long AI Documentation Protocol move surfacing in a specific domain (groundwater) where AI summaries are easy to find and frequently inaccurate.
