What today is about

Unit launch. One question runs through the whole unit: who owns the water?

That question only makes sense once you understand what water is, physically. The water cycle isn't trivia; it's the structure of the political problem. Today builds the cycle in detail: reservoirs (where water sits: atmosphere, soil moisture, rivers, lakes, groundwater, ocean, ice sheets) and residence times (how long water stays in each: atmosphere ~10 days, soil ~weeks-to-months, rivers ~weeks, lakes ~years, groundwater ~decades-to-millennia, ocean ~millennia, ice sheets ~tens of thousands of years).

Why residence time matters: it's why some water disputes are negotiable and others aren't. River allocations can be renegotiated: water cycles through fast. A depleted aquifer can't be renegotiated on human timescales; the water is gone for centuries. The Cauvery dispute (Tamil Nadu vs. Karnataka, the unit's anchor case) is fundamentally a fast-reservoir conflict (river allocation) layered on top of a slow-reservoir crisis (groundwater depletion across both states). Today opens that tension.

All four paths end with a labeled water-cycle diagram + an exit ticket connecting one reservoir to one Cauvery-dispute stakeholder. The path you pick is about how you build the diagram.

Exit ticket: reservoir + residence time + stakeholder claim

Three things: (1) name a water reservoir in the Cauvery basin · (2) state its approximate residence time · (3) identify one Cauvery-dispute stakeholder whose claim depends on that reservoir, and why. Generic ("groundwater" / "long" / "farmers") doesn't clear the bar. Specific is the move: e.g., "The shallow aquifer beneath the Cauvery delta has a residence time of decades. Tamil Nadu delta rice farmers depend on it for dry-season irrigation; depletion is irreversible on the timescale of their livelihoods."
