How this library is organized

Two layers. The Cross-Cutting Reference (Sections 1-5 below) is the durable library: sources, tools, simulators used across multiple units. The Per-Unit Selected Sources (Sections 7-14) are short, focused lists of 5-8 unit-specific resources, tagged to the relevant assessment.

Every resource has an OPVL tag (Origin / Purpose / Value / Limitations). This is intentional: the Resources page itself models the source-evaluation work students do in U0. Students learn OPVL by seeing it applied to real sources, not just by reading the framework.

Indian-specific sources have their own dedicated section (Section 5). The course is anchored in Chennai: many of our cases (Cauvery, Pallikaranai, Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu agriculture) require Indian primary sources, not American secondary ones.

AI tools have their own section (Section 4). The course's AI Documentation Protocol makes AI use legitimate and disclosed; the AI tools layer makes the practical options visible.

1. Cross-Cutting: Authoritative Data Sources

Live or regularly-updated authoritative datasets. Cite these as primary or near-primary sources in assessment work, not secondary summaries.

Our World in Data

Free, openly licensed data + visualizations on climate, energy, food, health. Excellent for HS-readable charts you can cite.

Origin
Oxford-affiliated research project; data curated from primary sources (IPCC, IEA, FAO, etc.).
Purpose
Public-education and policy-informing: explicitly designed to make global data accessible.
Value
Pre-built downloadable charts, transparent methodology, every chart has its data sources listed.
Limitations
Synthesis of others' data, not primary collection. Update cadence varies by indicator. Some topics underrepresented (Indigenous data; informal economies).

IPCC Assessment Reports (AR6)

Global scientific consensus on climate science. Summary for Policymakers + Technical Summary are HS-accessible.

Origin
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; reports written and reviewed by thousands of scientists, signed off by governments.
Purpose
To inform policy with assessed scientific consensus. NOT advocacy, by design.
Value
Most authoritative climate-science synthesis available; explicit confidence language ('virtually certain' vs. 'likely').
Limitations
Summary for Policymakers language is negotiated with governments: consensus-softened. 5-7 year cadence means rapid developments (recent extremes) underrepresented. Long; chapter selection matters.

USGS Earthquake Catalog + ShakeMap

Real-time + historical earthquake data globally, with shake-intensity mapping. Live updating.

Origin
U.S. Geological Survey; aggregates from global seismic networks (IRIS, etc.).
Purpose
Public hazard awareness + scientific research. Free, official, real-time.
Value
Comprehensive, authoritative, includes magnitude + intensity + felt reports + tectonic context.
Limitations
Stronger coverage in instrumented regions (US, Japan, Europe); sparser in low-instrumentation areas. Catalog limits at small magnitudes.

NASA Exoplanet Archive

Confirmed exoplanet catalog with measured parameters, detection methods, host star data.

Origin
NASA-funded research database, IPAC at Caltech, peer-reviewed publication confirmations.
Purpose
Authoritative scientific reference for exoplanet research and education.
Value
Every entry traceable to a peer-reviewed paper. Filter/sort interface excellent for student research.
Limitations
Parameters often have wide uncertainty (atmospheric composition usually unknown). Discovery-method biased (transit-survey heavy).

Global Forest Watch

Near-real-time global tree-cover loss mapping, plus drivers and historical context.

Origin
World Resources Institute (WRI) + university partners; uses Landsat + Sentinel satellite imagery.
Purpose
Transparency for forest loss + conservation advocacy. Partly funded by foundations with conservation agendas.
Value
Granular spatial data, downloadable, free, regularly updated.
Limitations
Tree-cover loss ≠ deforestation (includes plantations harvested in rotation); drivers algorithmically estimated. Recent loss may be over- or under-counted depending on cloud cover.

IEA World Energy Outlook + IEA data

Global energy data, country profiles, scenarios. Annual flagship WEO is the standard reference.

Purpose
Inform energy policy across OECD + member states. Historically fossil-leaning; in recent years has aligned more with energy-transition framing.
Value
Most comprehensive global energy dataset; scenarios standard in industry + policy debates.
Limitations
Paywall on detailed datasets; free tier sufficient for HS use. Historical underestimate of renewables growth is well-documented critique.

Climate Action Tracker

Country-by-country tracking of climate pledges + actual progress vs. 1.5°C and 2°C targets.

Purpose
Hold governments accountable to Paris commitments. Explicitly evaluative: they rate countries 'critically insufficient' to '1.5°C compatible.'

Comparable country ratings, transparent methodology, frequent updates.
Limitations
Rates pledges + actions, not all economic / social context. India is rated 'highly insufficient': discuss why with the framing, not as endpoint.

Climate Reanalyzer

Live daily global temperature, sea surface temperature, sea ice. Used heavily by climate scientists on social media.

Origin
University of Maine Climate Change Institute. Uses NOAA + Copernicus data feeds.
Purpose
Public-facing visualization of ongoing climate state. Often the first place anomalies are visible.
Value
Daily-update granularity; visually clear; widely cited by climate journalists.
Limitations
Daily anomaly framing can over-read short-term weather noise as climate signal. Pair with longer-term data for honest interpretation.

UNU-INWEH: Environmental Cost of AI's Energy Use (2026)

First global UN assessment of AI's carbon, water, and land footprints: the primary source behind the U0 Block 1 launch article. Selected key points are on-site; the full PDF is free.

Origin
UN institution research report: United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), the UN's water-and-environment think tank; named authors including Madani and Aczel.
Purpose
To give policymakers and the public the first consolidated global accounting of AI's environmental footprints.
Value
Primary/near-primary source: the report the news coverage summarizes; per-figure page citations; models its own AI-use disclosure (p. 11).
Limitations
Notes its own dependence on corporate disclosure: its data-center figures are only as complete as what companies report about their operations.

2. Cross-Cutting: External Simulators Worth Using

Use these instead of building our own where they already exist. En-ROADS in particular replaces any need for a course-built climate simulator.

En-ROADS (MIT / Climate Interactive)

World-class climate policy simulator. Adjust 18 levers (carbon price, renewables subsidy, deforestation, etc.) and see 2100 temperature impact in real time. Used in IPCC workshops.

Purpose
Public education + workshop facilitation for climate policy. Designed for non-experts.
Value
The single best free climate-policy sim available. Replaces any need for us to build one. Excellent for U4 + U7.
Limitations
Aggregated to global level: does not show regional/national variation. 'Reference scenario' assumes business-as-usual which is debated.

NASA Eyes on Exoplanets

3D interactive tour of known exoplanetary systems. Visual + good for orienting students to scale.

Public outreach + education. Free.
Value
Visually impressive; lets students fly through real exoplanet systems with accurate orbital parameters.
Limitations
Renders are artist's impressions for surface visuals: we don't actually know what these planets look like. Worth flagging.

PhET: Plate Tectonics

Interactive plate boundary visualization. Build oceanic vs. continental boundaries and watch the geology emerge.

Free browser planetarium. Pan and zoom anywhere in the night sky; jump to any date.

Excellent for orienting U1 to actual sky; show what stars Chennai sees, where exoplanetary systems sit.
Limitations
Web version is simpler than desktop Stellarium; for advanced features, the desktop version is free too.

HHMI BioInteractive

Free hub of short documentary films, Click-and-Learn interactives, and Data Points activities. Built for HS + intro college. Strong Earth science + evolution + ecology coverage despite the 'Bio' branding.

Free high-quality science education. Explicitly designed for classroom use, with teacher guides + assessments.
Value
Production values rival broadcast documentary; pedagogical materials are research-grounded. The short-film format (15-25 min) fits within an 80-min block with discussion time on either side. Specific clips called out in U2, U4, and U6 below.
Limitations
Despite the 'Bio' branding, coverage of physical Earth sciences (tectonics, atmosphere) is thinner than ecological coverage. Some films are US-centric in examples.

3. Cross-Cutting: Reading + Journalism (Global)

General-audience climate + environment journalism. Useful for background reading + finding op-ed exemplars (especially for U7).

Yale Climate Connections

Climate-science journalism; clear writing for general audiences. Daily updates.

Origin
Yale Center for Environmental Communication; foundation + Yale funded.
Purpose
Public climate-literacy + journalism. Explicitly accepts climate science as settled; investigates implications.
Value
Accessible, fact-checked, well-sourced. Strong for entry-level climate reading.
Limitations
Position is 'climate science is settled, what do we do', not neutral on the science question (because the science is settled). May read as partisan to skeptics.

The Conversation (Environment section)

Academic-journalism platform: working researchers write for general audiences with editorial support.

Origin
Non-profit; authors are academics with institutional affiliations disclosed; editors check journalistic standards.
Purpose
Translate research into accessible writing. Open-license republishing.
Value
Each article is by a real researcher with named expertise. Strong for current-research framing.
Limitations
Researcher voice means perspective matters; not balanced reporting in the traditional sense. Check author affiliations.

OpenStax (Astronomy 2e, Biology 2e, and others)

Free, peer-reviewed, openly-licensed (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) college textbooks from Rice University. Useful as foundational reading where the course needs a textbook spine. Specific chapter pointers in U1 and U6 below.

Limitations
Limited Earth & Env catalog: no standalone Earth Science textbook; coverage of U2/U3/U4/U5/U7 content is thin or absent. EXPLICIT RESTRICTION: OpenStax does not permit their content to be 'used in the training of large language models or otherwise be ingested into large language models or generative AI offerings without OpenStax's permission.' For our course: students may READ OpenStax chapters freely, but should NOT upload OpenStax PDFs into NotebookLM, Claude Projects, Gemini Gems, or similar tools as source material. Discuss this restriction explicitly in U0: it's a teaching artifact about the unsettled state of AI-and-copyright.

OpenStax, Astronomy 2e [open-license university textbook]

The textbook behind Earth as a Planet (sections 8.1, 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5). Our page is an adaptation, not a copy, which is why you can point an AI partner at our page freely but not at the book.

A free first-year undergraduate astronomy survey, written to replace a paid textbook.

A tertiary source written for first-year undergraduates, so it summarizes rather than reports. At least two of its numbers now sit behind the current literature: see the three-numbers note on our page, which says which figures we went with and why.

NotebookLM (Google)

Upload sources (PDFs, links, docs); the AI answers questions grounded in those sources only. Generates summaries, study guides, podcasts.

Source-grounded AI research assistant. Designed to reduce hallucinations by restricting to user-provided material.
Value
Citation-by-source-paragraph means students can trace any AI claim back to which source said it. Genuine improvement over chat-only research.
Limitations
Only as good as the sources you provide; will not surface evidence outside the corpus. Free tier has session limits.

Perplexity

Search-grounded AI: every claim links to web sources. Free tier sufficient for student research.

Purpose
Replace 'ask ChatGPT' with 'ask ChatGPT with citations'. Reduces but does not eliminate hallucinations.
Value
Citations are clickable; students can verify directly. Pro mode adds focused models.
