To my students,
Welcome to Earth and Environmental Science at AISC.
I have spent the past several months redesigning this course from the ground up. The materials you're going to use this year are new. The assessments are different from what you may have experienced in other science classes. The way we use AI is different. The way I'll grade your work is different. Most of these differences are deliberate, and I want to tell you upfront what they are and why.
What you're going to be able to do at the end of this year
By the end of June, you should be able to do four things you probably cannot do right now.
One. You should be able to read a scientific source, a report, a paper, a news article, an AI response, and tell me where it's strong, where it's weak, who made it and why, and what it cannot tell you. We call this OPVL, and we'll do it on almost every source you encounter this year, including AI outputs.
Two. You should be able to take a multi-criteria framework, like the habitability framework for a planet, or the sustainability framework for a piece of land, and apply it to a real case, defend your application in front of an audience, and revise your position when given better reasoning. You'll do this eight times this year. The first time is hard. By the eighth, it will be a skill you own.
Three. You should be able to use AI as a serious tool, not as a substitute for thinking, not as a forbidden temptation, but as a partner whose output you can evaluate, refine, and document honestly. The AI Documentation Protocol I'll explain in our first week is how we make this work.
Four. You should be able to take a stakeholder's perspective whose worldview is not yours, a farmer whose water is being taken, an ecologist whose mangroves are dying, an engineer whose city must withstand earthquakes, and argue from inside that perspective rigorously enough that someone who actually holds it would recognize themselves in your work. This is the hardest thing the course asks of you. It is also the most important.
The four threads
The year is organized around four threads that you'll see in every unit, every assessment, every defense:
- OPVL and AI Documentation: the discipline of evaluating sources, including AI, and documenting honestly how you used tools.
- Systems thinking: the discipline of seeing Earth as interconnected subsystems where changes propagate.
- Engineering design: the discipline of designing solutions under multi-criteria constraints with honest tradeoffs.
- Science, policy, and the public: the discipline of taking scientific work and translating it for audiences who must act on it.
Every unit hits all four threads. By the end of the year, the threads will feel like your own thinking habits rather than rules I imposed. That's the goal.
The eight defenses
This course has eight major assessments, one per unit. Each ends with you defending your work in front of an audience: a NASA Evaluation Committee, a Defense Panel, a Stakeholder Roundtable, a Policy Panel, a Regional Planning Board, an Op-Ed reading. Sometimes the audience is your classmates in role. Sometimes I bring in colleagues or other adults. Always, you have to put your thinking forward where it can be tested.
This is hard. It does not get easier the first three times. It starts to get easier around the fifth time. By the eighth defense, you will know what it feels like to stand up, hold a position, and revise it gracefully when given better evidence. Almost no high-school student gets this much practice. You will. The Defending Your Work page walks through the moves you'll use.
What I'm asking you to commit to
There is a fuller document at Class Expectations that lays this out properly. The short version is five commitments:
- Show up. Read the materials. Do the work. The course is designed around inquiry: if you don't bring your own thinking, there's nothing for the room to push on.
- Document your AI use. Every time. Honestly. The AI Documentation Protocol is not a punishment; it is a habit that lets you use AI as a real tool without sliding into the version where AI does your thinking for you.
- Engage feedback you don't want to hear. Peer review, defense panels, my comments on your drafts: the value is in the feedback you'd rather dismiss, not the feedback you wanted.
- Take perspectives that aren't your default. Some of this year's work will ask you to argue from inside a worldview you don't share. Do the work. The discomfort is the learning.
- Tell me when you're stuck. Office hours, email, a note after class: whichever works. Stuck is normal. Silent and stuck is what I'm trying to avoid.
What I'm committing to you
In return, four things:
- Timely feedback. Substantive comments on your drafts within a reasonable window, usually one week, never more than two.
- Honest grading. Your strand scores will reflect what you did, with reasoning I can defend if you ask me about it. No mystery numbers. No teacher-favoritism. No grade inflation. See The Rubric Explained.
- Respect for your developing thinking. You are 17. Your ideas will not always be right. They will sometimes be obviously wrong. I will engage them as if they matter, because they do. The way you become a sharper thinker is by being treated as one before you fully are.
- No surprises in assessment. You will know what each assessment asks of you, what the rubric measures, and what success looks like, before you do the work. If I ever feel like I tricked you, that's my failure, not yours.
One personal note
I rebuilt this course because I think we are in a moment where science education has to change. AI has rearranged what's worth teaching. Climate change has rearranged what science students will be asked to do as adults. The world your generation is inheriting needs people who can evaluate sources, take perspectives, design solutions under constraints, and defend their work honestly. Memorizing answers is not enough. It was never enough, but the gap is now too obvious to ignore.
This course is my attempt to teach what I think you actually need. I will get parts of it wrong. When I do, I want you to tell me. You are part of the work; this is not just a class I'm delivering. Your honest reactions, especially the critical ones, are how the course improves. Don't be polite about it. Be useful.
