Keep this document open while you read course material. Look up unfamiliar terms in your first language; learn the English terms over time. The visual cues and sentence frames help you USE each term, not just translate it.

How to use this reference

Each term has the same five elements:

IMPORTANT: about the translations

These translations are AI-assisted starting references. They help you orient quickly to unfamiliar English vocabulary in your first language. They are NOT verified by native-speaker linguists or technical translators.

  • Use the translation to UNDERSTAND a term, but then practice using it in English (the academic + assessment language).
  • Some terms (OPVL, IPCC, op-ed) are commonly used as loanwords across languages: translation marked as loanword.
  • If a translation seems wrong or has a better alternative in your dialect, ask Ms. Jayanthi/Mr. Ignash or a native-speaking teacher. Errors are expected; corrections are welcome.
  • For high-stakes work (citations, formal writing), verify against authoritative sources in your language (textbooks, government documents).

Organization: Terms are grouped by unit (U0 through U7), in roughly the order they appear in the unit. Length: ~140 terms total. Don't try to memorize everything: use the reference as a working dictionary. Search: Use Cmd+F (Mac) / Ctrl+F (Windows) to find a specific term.
