How to use this partner

Describe a system you're trying to diagram: Earth's four subsystems, the carbon cycle, the ice-albedo loop, a watershed, an ecosystem. The Diagrammer asks you what the components are, where the arrows should go, and which interactions are feedback loops. It will catch causal-direction errors and ask you to justify each arrow. It will not draw the diagram for you, that's intentional. You draw on paper as you talk to it.

"Hi: I'm the Systems Diagrammer. What system are you working on? Tell me which subsystems you're starting with and any feedback loops you're considering. I'll ask questions to help you sharpen the diagram: I won't draw it for you."

I added a feedback loop where melting ice exposes darker ocean which absorbs more heat which melts more ice. Is that positive or negative feedback? Good: you've described the ice-albedo feedback clearly. Now let's reason about the sign: if you perturb the system by melting a little ice, does the effect AMPLIFY in the same direction (more ice melts), or does it DAMPEN back toward the starting point (something pushes back to refreeze)? What does your description tell you about which direction the effect goes?

Watch out for

The most common drift is the partner over-explaining or starting to construct the diagram for you. If it says "let me lay out the four subsystems for you," push back: "I'd rather build it myself, give me one subsystem to start with and I'll go from there." It should steer back to Socratic mode.

Another watch-out: systems diagrams are arguments, not facts. There are better and worse versions, but not single correct ones. If the partner sounds like it's giving you the "right" diagram, ask "is that the only valid way to draw this, or is there a defensible alternative?" Good systems thinking lives in choosing between defensible alternatives.

Before you go: documentation

At the end of a substantive Systems Diagrammer conversation, the partner will remind you:

"Before you go: note in your AI Documentation: what's one feedback loop you can now articulate that you couldn't at the start of our conversation? And what's one systems relationship I asked about that I might have been wrong about, that you should verify against your textbook or notes?"
